2009 Man Bellies & Hairy Backs Car Wash

I was looking around at some of the stuff on my computer and it dawned on me that I hadn't posted the video of this past summer's car wash for Kacie's Ride for Hope on the blog. If I remember right, I had held off posting it until it was posted over on the official website. I guess signals got crossed all over the place.. lol.. It never got onto the official website, and I never managed to get it posted here. So, better late than never, right?

Here's the video that was done for the event:

2009 Man Bellies & Hairy Backs Car Wash

I gave up on YouTube for this video because they kept blocking it due to the music that was chosen to accompany the video. (I guess it's that copyright stuff.) Daily Motion didn't object to the song, so no blocking of the video... Anyway.. Hope you enjoy the video!

The folks are gearing up for this years ride, so if you're interested in participating, now's the time to get on over to the Kacie's Ride for Hope website and get the information about the ride. And about the cause that the ride benefits. The fourth annual ride is scheduled for September 11, 2010. If they do another "Man Bellies & Hairy Backs Car Wash", I'll try to post the date, time and location here on the blog..

Edited to add:
Here's our post for the First Annual Man Bellies & Hairy Backs Car Wash.

Man Bellies and Hairy Backs...

Hey Sis and readers.

Last year I posted about a Car wash we did for Kacie's Ride for Hope. See First annual Man-bellies and Hairy-backs Carwash? I've been asking Pat to post some of the pictures. As I've told friends and family about it, everyone enjoyed the story and wished they could have seen it. Finally, as we are starting to meet and plan this years run I reminded Pat about the want for pictures. So here they are, on the website for the run: http://www.kaciesrideforhope.com/

Look on the right side of the page and click on the Man Bellies and Hairy Backs Carwash to see the pictures. There were a lot more pics taken but these will give you a good idea of how much fun we had that day. We have decided to do it twice this year, more often might loose it's uniqueness. Pat said he will post the date and location on the site.

I'm looking forward to helping again to benefit "Kacie's Ride" and the "Center for Violence Free Relationships" it supports. The bonus for me is the fun I'll have and memories I'll gain. I , no we all, need to remember to use LOTS more sunscreen this year! Last year we were having so much fun we didn't think about re-screening. It was intense for a couple days. But every time the burn hurt, I'd just grin and remember the good time we had.

Hope some of you readers will be close enough to come to the carwash and enjoy the show!

Untill next post, God Bless, have fun and share it.

THUNDERPRESS NEWS

So here’s the article that came out in the Thunderpress Nov. 8, issue. Thunderpress is a free newsprint magazine available at many bike shops. The article is very descriptive and well written. I’ve inserted a couple corrections in italics.

THUNDERPRESS Nov. 8, Article:
KACIE’S RIDE FOR HOPE
A sense of community
Bikers combat domestic violence
By Flea

PLACERVILLE, CALIF., SEPT. 13----- Even though the calendar noted the last day of summer as weeks away, the feel of the changing seasons hung in the air as we leathered up for the ride out of the Sacramento Valley, up into the Sierra Nevada mountain range for the third iteration of Kacie’s Ride for Hope. Information on the website for the run had warned that the temps would be cool during the ride as the 140-mile route would take us over the famous Echo Summit near South Lake Tahoe and across Highway 89 before eventually cutting west on State Route 88 towards the 8,650-foot Carson Pass.

By the time we rolled into the Mountain Democrat’s already packed parking lot for the preliminary ceremonies and registration in Placerville, all those toasty, very unnecessary duds were being crammed into saddlebags. It was a beautiful day to be on the road.

Pat Barron, founder of Kacie’s Ride. was working on the microphone and greeting riders as they continued to roll in. The tall unassuming biker with the “in memory of Kacie” patch stitched on his vest stood before the crowd to explain how this run came about when his voice cracked and he was unable to hide his emotions. Kathleen “Kacie” Barron was Pat’s younger sister. She was killed on July 26, 2006, by her estranged lover. She had moved on with her life and was no longer living with her killer (who was not a biker), when he showed up in her garage and shot her.
(I need to add here that Mario, her killer, denied being romantically involved with her in his closing letter during trial testimony. He had stayed at her home refusing to leave until Kacie was spending nights at friend’s homes waiting for him to leave, He trapped her in a trailer she was repairing in her own driveway and shot her.)

Kacie, a gracious lady with a big heart and warm smile, was known to open her doors to women and children trying to escape domestic violence and was actively involved with the Center for Violence Free Relationships in El Dorado County. She loved attending bike runs in her spare time and the route chosen for the ride, which includes Hope Valley, was one of her favorites.

For Pat and his wife Sharon, the grief of losing Kacie was exacerbated by their anger at the senselessness of it all. Instead of standing around with their hands in their pockets, however, the Barron’s took that anger and started trying to make positive changes in the world. Their efforts have evolved into a remarkable memorial ride that both honors Kacie’s life and benefits the community in which she lived.

Along the way of organizing the run, the Barrons became familiar with the South Lake Tahoe Women’s Center whose executive director, Matt Huckabee, was on hand to present Pat with a roll of Lifesavers as a reward for his work at “saving lives” and advised him to “just take one at a time” as riders cheered. Members of the center had made, delivered and set up several wooden silhouettes (collectively called the Silent Witness) that were each labeled with the names and information that memorialized the women who had died as victims of domestic violence. This year, for the first time, a child was represented, too.

Andrew Bailey was 2 ½ years old when he was murdered by his father earlier this spring. His mother, Merrily Melson, nervously shared her story with the crowd as Pat stood nearby, displaying the framed picture of the little boy with the huge grin. The reality of the effects of domestic violence came through loud and clear.

As departure time neared, Pat again addressed the crowd. Warning that the route included some tough terrain, he advised riders to ride within their abilities and be safe while keeping in mind the reason for the run. He also said, “citizens are watching us! We want them to watch and to see that we are here for a cause and we want them to get involved, too. We want to end domestic violence.”

Riders broke up into several small packs to meet up later at a designated rest stop at Hope Valley, where memories of Kacie were shared among the folks who knew her best. Riders helped themselves to refreshments before setting out for the most beautiful stretch of the ride.

The sights along Highway 88 were amazing as we navigated the spans of blacktop through Carson Pass which rises to almost 9,000 feet and offers such views as the crystal clear waters of Kirkwood, Silver, Caples and Blue Lakes. Skirting along the narrowing and twisting Mormon Immigrant Trail, we passed over the dams at Sly Park that contain Jenkinson Lake before dropping down into Pleasant Valley and arriving at Pioneer Park where the real party was rocking.

Old school, simple and fun, the celebration included auctions, raffles so huge that practically everyone walked away with something (this writer even scored a free trip to a beauty salon where I’ll challenge the stylist with seriously wind-blown helmet hair and risk being tossed out the door), and a variety of door prizes.

An incredible homemade chili was served alongside hot-off the grill grub that sated the masses before everyone gathered to participate in fundraising efforts. In lieu of biker games, creative gag prizes were handed out to a variety of riders for things like oldest (Tom Pettibone, who received such goodies as Metamucil and liniment), farthest (Pat Bowers from Carson City, who won Monkey Butt Powder), slowest )Louie who scored Octane Booster and an orange reflector vest), and youngest (suckers and a baseball cap). Prizes were also given for best bikes.

Adolph won as highest bidder at auction for the handmade Kacie’s Ride 2008 belt buckle and then promptly gave it back to Pat during a private moment when he shared that he had been a neighbor of Kacie’s and remembered her well. Mike Mullen won a computer when he outbid the competition. Other prizes included weekend packages at Harrah’s Hotel Casino, a variety of wines, tools, a bike lift, and a pile of goods and services too vast to list. By the day’s end an estimated $12,000 had been raised to be donated to the Center for Violence Free Relationships and we all shared a sense of community. I’m pretty sure Kacie would approve. (http://www.thecenternow.org/)

An excellent description of an excellent run, don’t you think? I hope it inspires more people to participate next year. And this is not a Harley run. Yeah most bikes are Harleys but we welcome all riders. In my group were a few Harleys, a `65 Triumph and a couple Ninja bikes. We all had fun.

Again, God Bless.
Gene.

First annual Man-bellies and Hairy-backs Carwash?

Last weekend in Placerville I had the opportunity to participate in a "different" carwash. Pat Barron had been bouncing ideas around to help generate funds for this years "Kacie's Ride for Hope." We had talked about doing a carwash with us men washing the cars. We joked about going shirtless in all our glory to treat the women for a change. Beer bellies and hairy backs exposed with a couple hard bodies included. We were ages about 8 to 60 and did we have fun!!! For 6 hours on sunday starting around 9:30 in the morning, we washed and dried cars non-stop. We were a bit spastic at first but after about an hour we fell into crews and worked exceptionally well together. Two hoses going were either pre wetting or rinsing as two men attacked the wheels and 4 to 6 men would wash and scrub the vehicles vehicles two at a time. Then we would pull the vehicles up and another crew would shammy the cars, blow them off with a leaf blower (Pat's idea), and wash windows. Only a man would think of the leaf blower and it worked really well!!! We recieved enthusiastic compliments and we had a few people go get other cars. The 30' motorhome was a challenge and about 10 men worked on it until it was done. A few people drove in just to make contributions to the fund.

So there's a lot of severely sunburned bellies, love handles, legs and feet this week. But every time it hurts, I smile remembering how much fun we had.

All said and done, with expenses covered, we raised $1,100 to put in the purse for this years run and ultimately add to this years contribution to the women's center now named "the center for violence-free relationships." We are thinking of making this an annual thing too. If so, I'll try to post announcements next year prior to the wash.

Pat sent me what was in the Mountain Democrat but sent me a scanned picture that was very poor. I'm not sure but believe it was his letter to the editor, here's the print:

Kacie’s Ride For Hope, man bellies and hairy backs car wash
PAT BARRON Placerville August 19, 2008 16:35
EDITOR: Our first-time car wash, Aug. 17 at Breaker Glass was a huge success. The funds we raised from the wash will assist us with “Kacie’s Ride” this year and in turn will support The Center for Violence Free Relationships. I know it would not have been a success without all those dirty cars, even a 30-foot motor home, the cars were non-stop. I thank you all for those generous donations and the opportunity to wash your vehicles, and to those that just handed us money, a special thanks to all those bellies and hairy backs that brought their families out and did all the work. Kevin Brown and Breaker Glass on Placerville Drive, we could not have pulled it off with out you and the use of your parking lot. I am especially proud of the way my family shows up and supports me at all these events. Once again our community stood up for a good cause. With your continued help, together we can all make a difference. Thank you all. Kacie’s brother.

The run is coming up soon, on September 13th! You can get info for the run @ http://www.kaciesrideforhope.com/ . There you can find pictures of past runs, donation forms, a map for the run and more. Last year was a blast and we expect more to participate this year.

Had fun, having fun and planning on more.

Windy Monday.....

I got woke up early this morning by the lovely sound of the venetian blinds slapping against the window sill. We've got a strong north wind blowing today, so now all the windows on the north side of the house are closed. And, naturally, with the north wind, we've got lots of dirt and pollen in the air and my allergies are kicking up. I am tired of sneezing.

At least out here in Meridian we don't have the problems that Marysville has. The Appeal Democrat is reporting in their "Breaking News" that the winds are kicking up a fire on the northern edge of the city of Marysville. PG&E are also reporting numerous power outages around Yuba and Sutter Counties. So far so good out here in Meridian, I haven't seen the power blink yet, but if the winds keep up, I'm sure I will. If it doesn't go out completely that is. One thing that Meridian has to it's advantage though is the presence of a PG&E maintenance facility here in town. We usually get our power back fairly quickly if something goes down/out that affects the whole town.

In trial watching news, as usual, I spent some time this weekend lurking and posting on the In Session Message boards and am amazed at how some folks can come up with off-the-wall theories that have no basis in fact, no evidence, nothing at all that can justify their ideas. Then, this morning when I looked at the icanhazcheezeburger.com website I found this image that perfectly fits some of those folks.

pet

In other words, don't confuse me with facts! Don't tell me how my whodunit idea won't fit the evidence. I CAN'T HEAR YOU, so I'll just continue posting my own ideas and to heck with facts! lol...

Today is Monday the 12th of May... Mario Lozano's sentencing is this Friday, the 16th. Counting today, he has 5 days until he knows how long he gets to stay locked up for murdering Kacie Barron. And 4 months from tomorrow it will be time for Kacie's Ride For Hope to End Domestic Violence.

Trampoline Fun Anyone?

I found an unusual video this morning. I doubt if you'd see a wild fox "playing" on a trampoline very often. The copy of it on YouTube was uploaded about 2 years ago, but I'd never seen it until this morning. He (or she!) looks like it's enjoying that bouncy place very much! lol...

On to other stuff, the cherries that I posted about on Sunday are about half gone now. The birds have found the tree and are having a ball stealing the cherries. My cats seem to enjoy watching the birds in that tree.. They will sit on a table that is near the back fence where the tree is and just watch the birds fly through. Of course, the birds seem to enjoy dive bombing my cats too. My next door neighbor's girlfriend had a good time with a ladder and a huge zip lock bag next to the fence. She's taking a gallon or so of the cherries to her daughter's when she goes for a visit later today. And, yes, I've been picking them too. They're yummy!

Speaking of "dive bombing" birds. Yesterday I was watching my 4 year old grandson blowing bubbles in the front yard and a pair of humming birds actually dive bombed him! I wish I'd had my camera with me because the look on my grandson's face was priceless! I have no clue why the birds did it. I don't think we were near a nest or anything! Maybe they were just trying to communicate to us that it was time to refill the humming bird feeders?

Today is May 7th. That means 9 more days until Mario Lozano finds out how long he gets to stay in prison for killing Kacie Barron.

Kacie's Ride for Hope is on for this year. The ride will be September 13th this year and the flyer is Here. (It's a pdf file, so it may take a moment or two to load.) Kacie's brother Pat has a page up about this year's ride: Kacie's Ride For Hope 2008. The web page says they are gearing up for this year's ride, looking for donations of cash or raffle prizes. Last year's ride enabled Pat and the rest of the supporters to donate $7,525.00 to the El Dorado Women's Center in Kacie's memory! They're hoping to top that amount this year. I hope they do it! They've also added a page of pictures from last year's ride; 2007 Kacie's Ride Photos. I spotted my brother in one of the shots! lol...

Kacie Barron & The Ride For Hope

Kacie Barron, 40, died July 26, 2006, a victim of domestic abuse, allegedly murdered by a man still in custody and awaiting trial, Mario Lozano. Her name, nor the name of her accused murderer haven't been in the news much since her murder. I was googling this morning trying to find out what is happening with the accused murderer. All I can find are old news articles. I found virtually nothing about the actual crime, nor anything at all about Mario Lozano, other than the fact that he is still in custody. I suppose I need to call my brother to see if there has been anything at all happening.

Kacie's name comes up once a year in local news, though. Her brother, Pat Barron organized a motorcycle run in her honor along with many of her friends, including my brother that first year after her death. Kacie's Ride For Hope. The ride was a 140 mile bike ride from Placerville to Fair Play via Highways 88 and 89 through the beautiful Hope Valley to benefit the El Dorado Women's Center. They organized a run again last year and had twice as many participants as the first year. I'm sure there will be a third annual run to honor Kacie and to benefit the Woman's Center in El Dorado County. By the way, about the graphic above? The woman on the bike is Kacie.

I need to call my brother and see if he can give me anymore information. About the status of the POS that is jail awaiting trial for her murder. (By the way, for those who have encouraged me to attend a trial, this is one that I would like to see. For my brother. For Kacie's family. And about the Ride For Hope. I'll update later.
